Best places to visit in the north of the UK

England is a beautiful country with a rich history, beautiful villages and incredible national parks from top to bottom. The north of the country is full of many such places. We’ve listed some of our favourites for you to explore and enjoy.

Lake district

We couldn’t talk about the North without mentioning the Lake District. The collection of 16 stunning lakes is a protected UNESCO National Park. Filled with rolling hills and mountains, the Lake District is home to some of the most relaxing destinations in the country. For those looking for a quiet experience, visit Ullswater Lake. The lake is pristine and untouched, great for paddle-boarding and hiking.

Lindisfarne

Hidden away just off the coast of Northumbria is the wonderful Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The first thing anyone planning a visit should be aware of is the limited access to the island. Every day when the tide comes in, the island is cut off from the mainland. Once on the island be sure to visit the legendary abbey and Lindisfarne Castle, both of which are steeped in history. The island is widely considered the starting point for the Viking Age in Northern Europe.

Peak District

The Peak District National Park is the largest in the UK and one of the best places to visit. Just some of the many great sights and attractions in the national park include The UK’s highest opera house in Buxton. The Pennine Way which is the UK’s first long distance footpath. The Blue John Cavern, one of the very few places you are able to find the mineral with the same name. On top of these great attractions the Peak District is known for its spectacular caverns and underground rivers as well as being very popular with paragliders and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Chester

The final place on our list today is the city of Chester. It was originally constructed as a Roman Fortress and still maintains a lot of the Roman history within its walls. When visiting be sure to visit the gothic cathedral, the city’s almost 500 year old church. The city is also home to the Chester racecourse, one of the country’s leading horse racing tracks.
